This is an old garden in the centre of Vienna. Apparently during the world wars(?) the government gave permission for this land, traditionally park, to be cultivating to help with the food shortage.

National Air and Space Museum Hangers

My friend Cindy interned at the Smithsonian for a month, during which she met a guy who was able to give her a tour of the National Air and Space Museum's hanger archives in Maryland. I got to tag along for what was a day of seeing and touching history.

Carl leads us into a sealed room with what look an awful lot like bodies. . .
But they weren't quite bodies. They were space gear!!!

I rowed the MCR boat this year. Training was light, and it was a great chance to get some of the MCR who had never rowed before out on the water.

The Vikings from Jesus College. They were also in our division (the lowest one) and proceeded to almost set a record with the number of places they went up.
It looks like a bump race in action, but in reality we had been klaxoned before this picture was taken. One of the hazards of bumps racing is that you will get a number of boats bumping in the same stretch of river, thus blocking the river for all the boats behind. When this happens, the Marshalls 'klaxon' the race, which means they blow big horns and try to get everyone (sometimes unsuccessfully) to stop. This race was klaxoned because one of the guys in the first boat in line caught a crab (his oar got stuck in the water) and he whacked himself on the forehead with the handle, opening a large gash. Ok, fair enough, we thought...until we saw the same guy an hour later racing again!
Not too bad on form, eh? A vast improvement from our time trials the week before.

A few of us decided to head to Venice for a weekend. It's an amazing city, but completely dead except for the tourists. A shame, really.

The water was pretty, but I imagine during the heyday of Venice, it was anything but.
Life necessarily moves at a slower pace here. I am definitely a fan of that.
The other side of the city. Venice only has 70,000 residents, but it gets over 17 million tourists a year.

Trip to Sussex

I headed to Sussex for a week of research in the archives of the Harvard Sussex Program. Here are some pictures from the night I took off.

Some Highlights of the last 5 weeks of the academic year (for me, anyway)

Punting with Camille on the Cherwell. Camille, my best friend, is working in London this summer, a change from her studies in Vermont. We managed to have a few days together before I left for Vienna, and made the most of it by doing many Oxford traditions...such as punting :-)

A Brief Trip Home

My parents are moving house, so I used my free airline ticket I got at Christmas to fly home to pack up my room. The trip turned in a fantastic chance to catch up with family and friends. I spent time with my sister Emily in DC, my parents in Virginia, and my friends from Olaf (Kate, Tom, and Camille) who now live in New England.

Spain at Easter 2005

Kathleen and I spent a week in Spain, and it happened to be Easter. We Started in Valencia, and stopped by Murcia, Lorca, and the Mar Menor lake before heading back to Valencia for Kathleen's conference. I went back to Oxford, but Kathleen travelled to Rome after the conference finished, and arrived shortly after the Pope died.

Our First sight in Valencia. This is a Virgin Mary Statue about four stories high. It's a wood frame, much like the effigies that were burned the week before (as an Easter celebration, I believe). Obviously, they didn't burn this one.
Looking from the Virgin Mary. While you can't see them in this picture, the virgin was COVERED in flowers, and apparently, after the festival, everyone just comes and takes the flowers away in big bundles. A good first impression of Spain!

A busy time, with trips to Brussels, the passing of my Transfer of Status Viva, the Queen, and, of course, punting.

It was Anna's birthday. She had nothing planned. So naturally, we put on our robes and went for a stroll!

Between the lot of us, though, we only have £1.23, enough for a single scoop. But oh, what a scoop!

On our ramblings about the European country-side, we decided it would be lovely to visit Liechtenstein for their national day on 15 August. This little country of 34,000 people has a homely feel to it. For instance, the day was marked with free food and beer for the entire population!

This year I decided to host an Easter Egg Hunt and Feast at my house. We had the hunt along the banks of the River Cherwell, which runs through the fields behind my house.
